Kura Hulanda & Otrabanda: History & Culture

Curacao is bursting with color, history and culture, and nowhere is that more alive than in Otrabanda. This vibrant neighborhood in Willemstad, with the historic Kura Hulanda Village as its cultural heart, breathes history. What was once a center of trade and migration has developed over the years into a dynamic and renewed neighborhood full of character.

Otrabanda: “the other side” of Willemstad

Otrabanda literally means “the other side” and is located on the western shore of St. Anna Bay, opposite Punda. The two parts of the city are connected by the Queen Emma Bridge, a floating pontoon bridge that is one of the island’s most famous landmarks.

Although Punda was originally the commercial and administrative heart of Curaçao during the colonial period, Otrabanda began to develop as an extension of this from the 18th century onwards. This side of the bay was mainly home to craftsmen, workers and liberated Afro-Curaçaoans. The district grew into a social and cultural centre for the local population, with markets, churches, houses and later cinemas and shops. In contrast to the more prosperous Punda, Otrabanda had a more mixed population, with predominantly less wealthy residents.

Today, Otrabanda is a dynamic district with a mix of historical architecture, modern art and cultural hotspots. In recent years, several restoration projects have been carried out to breathe new life into the authentic buildings and streets.

Kura Hulanda Village: A Step Back in Time

Within Otrabanda lies Kura Hulanda Village, a historic area known for its colonial architecture and rich heritage. Originally a residential area for laborers and slaves, this village was restored and transformed into a cultural and arts center in the early 21st century.

An important part of this is the Kura Hulanda Museum, which extensively illustrates the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Among other things, African artefacts, colonial objects and contemporary art are exhibited here.

Besides the museum, the area is known for its cobbled streets, squares with art installations and boutique hotels that retain the area's old charm.
